[AIMSA "Unity in Diversity"] Nepal SC orders to end cast discrimination in Sanskrit school

Nepal SC orders to end cast discrimination in Sanskrit school

Nepal top court has ordered for ending caste discrimination in admissions in a Sanskrit school managed by the Pashupati temple trust, as the interim constitution guarantees equal rights to all.Supreme Court has ordered Veda Vidyashram, a Sanskrit school, of Pashupati area to enroll students from all castes irrespective of castes. The four decade old school only allowed admission to high-caste Hindu Bramhins.

The court has made the decision in the case against Vidyashram filed by a lawyer who argued its admissions policy was wrong and illegal. The school has 75 Bramhin students from 75 districts of the country, one from each district.

Now the court has asked the school to admit students from all castes who want to study Sanskrit as the Interim Constitution of the Republic Nepal guarantees equality to all irrespective of caste and creed, said an official at the Pashupati Area Development Trust, that manages the Vidyashram.

"The court has ruled that there should be no caste-based discrimination in getting admission into the Sanskrit school,"the official said.

The school, established in Kathmandu in 1974, takes children as young as nine years old for instruction in Hindu rituals and Sanskrit language.
